L’insorgenza del grande tema dell’armonia nel Neiye, come in tutto il pensiero della Cina antica, non si situa in una dimensione astratta e atemporale, ma va invece concretamente ricondotta al suo contesto storico preciso e determinato: un contesto di straordinaria e ineguagliata creatività spirituale, che rappresenta l’autentica età assiale del pensiero cinese, e in cui il problema del conflitto assunse un ruolo centrale e determinante, come attestano inequivocabilmente i documenti dell’epoca e come mostrano con grande evidenza e abbondanza di dettagli gli studi contemporanei.
Rievochiamo brevemente i tratti essenziali di quella straordinaria stagione: si tratta di un’epoca di drammatica crisi, fra il V e il III secolo a.C., nel cui corso si dissolvono gli ordinamenti e i valori del mondo arcaico e la cui fase conclusiva, compresa fra il 453 e il 221 a.C., non casualmente è denominata età degli Stati Combattenti. Dal declino della dinastia regnante dei Zhou (1045-256 a.C.) sorgono entità politiche nuove e potenti, nuovi regni che si combattono senza tregua in guerre cruente. Usurpazioni e contese dissolvono la solidarietà, i costumi, i codici di condotta dell’antica aristocrazia, i cui fondamenti erano d’ordine religioso e rituale, e la forza brutalmente si impone nei rapporti interni ed esterni ai clan nobiliari e agli stati. Da questa stagione di violenza e di lotte senza quartiere emergerà la realtà nuova dell’impero centralizzato, fondato dal sovrano dello stato di Qin – il Primo Imperatore – nel 221 a.C. (…)
Sono le modalità stesse dei conflitti a subire in questa fase una profonda trasformazione: si passa da una guerra di stampo aristocratico, condotta secondo le regole di un codice d’onore che si è andato via via affievolendo, a una guerra totale, che coinvolge eserciti immensi e masse enormi di popolazione, divenendo feroce e brutale massacro. È uno scenario di caos dominato dalla violenza e dalla sopraffazione, in cui ha luogo un’immane distruzione. È un mondo che si congeda brutalmente dall’armonia della Cina arcaica, rispetto alla quale si consuma una frattura profonda e radicale.
È da questa frattura traumatica che muove la riflessione dell’anonimo e sconosciuto autore del Neiye, come degli altri autori a lui contemporanei. Per lui, come per loro, il pensiero deve assumersi il compito di misurarsi con il conflitto e con la violenza, di dominare il disordine sotto il Cielo, di ricostruire l’armonia. È dunque sotto il segno di polemos che ha inizio, per lui come per tutti loro, la ricerca dell’armonia. Essa non può più rappresentare l’irriflessiva adesione a un immobile dato, come avveniva nel mondo arcaico, in cui tradizioni e convenzioni vigevano con la medesima infallibile cogenza che governa il ciclo della natura; comunque si venga a configurare, essa ora non può che costituire un risultato, ossia l’esito del movimento del pensiero. Non è un’armonia ignara di conflitto quella di cui ci parla il Neiye, così come tutti i grandi testi di quest’epoca, ma un’armonia che si costituisce muovendo dal conflitto, che si consegue attraversando e oltrepassando il conflitto.
Nel Neiye non si esprime quindi un atteggiamento inerte e remissivo, bensì un pensiero audace, che attraversa con fiducia e con speranza un’immane catastrofe, un’era di inaudita barbarie. Un pensiero capace di immaginare che il greve, opaco e buio presente – «il tempo degli assassini, dei ladri e dei banditi» così vividamente rappresentati dalle testimonianze coeve – avrebbe avuto fine e che gli esseri umani, nonostante tutto, serbassero entro di sé la capacità di alzare gli occhi verso l’alto, sollevandoli dalle zolle insanguinate di orrendi campi di battaglia.
