La fine del mito della notizia

Nel settembre del 2004, a due mesi dalle elezioni presidenziali americane − che vedevano fronteggiarsi, in una campagna dominata dalla politica estera e dai temi militari, il presidente uscente George W. Bush e lo sfidante democratico John Kerry −, la CBS mandò in onda durante il suo programma di punta «60 Minutes» un servizio che raccontava come George W. Bush, fra il 1968 e il 1974, avesse evitato di partire per il Vietnam grazie ad appoggi e raccomandazioni che gli avevano consentito di entrare nell’aviazione della «Texas National Guard». Presto però la produttrice del programma, Mary Mapes, e il conduttore, il mostro sacro del giornalismo americano, Dan Rather, − che pochi mesi prima avevano svelato al mondo la storia di abusi e sevizie compiuti da militari americani nel carcere iracheno di Abu Ghraib − finirono al centro di una bufera mediatico-politica che rischiò di travolgere l’emittente televisiva, portò al licenziamento di Mapes e costrinse Rather alle dimissioni. Di questa vicenda, nota anche come Rathergate, narra Truth – Il prezzo della verità (Truth, USA, 2015, 125’), film d’esordio dello sceneggiatore James Vanderbilt.
Dopo aver portato alla luce nell’aprile del 2004 lo scandalo di Abu Ghraib, Mary Mapes (la splendida Cate Blanchett) mette insieme una squadra investigativa incaricata di fare rapidamente luce sul periodo in cui l’allora Presidente degli Stati Uniti aveva prestato servizio nella Guardia Nazionale e sulle voci di favoritismi personali che gli avrebbero evitato il Vietnam. Mentre indaga fra gli archivi e ricerca, con scarso successo, testimoni (quasi tutti negano di sapere o non sono disposti a parlare), il team della CBS si imbatte nel Tenente Colonnello Bill Burkett (Stacy Keach), che all’epoca dei fatti era nella Guardia Nazionale. Burkett consegna ai giornalisti la fotocopia di un documento in grado, secondo lui, di provare le accuse che gravano sulla carriera militare di Bush. Mapes e i suoi credono di aver finalmente trovato la chiave di volta per il lancio del loro scoop. Convocano esperti in grado di analizzare il documento e, nonostante alcuni nutrano dubbi sulla sua autenticità (anche per aspetti di natura tipografica), Mapes decide di andare avanti.
Così l’8 settembre del 2004 Dan Rather (un professionale Robert Redford) dagli studi della CBS va in onda con il servizio sul Presidente Bush, incentrato − oltre che sul documento fornito da Burkett − anche sulla testimonianza di Ben Barnes (Philip Quast), che nel 2004 era uno dei più grossi finanziatori della campagna elettorale di John Kerry, mentre all’epoca dei fatti oggetto dell’inchiesta era a capo della Camera dei rappresentanti del Texas e da quella posizione − aveva dichiarato − si era attivato per aiutare il giovane George Bush a entrare nella Guardia Nazionale come pilota. La trasmissione scatena subito la reazione dei media conservatori, ma è il lavoro dei giornalisti − non la notizia − a essere messo da questi sotto accusa. Ciò costringe la CBS a nominare una commissione interna d’inchiesta per esaminare attentamente la vicenda.
Tratto dal libro autobiografico di Mary Mapes Truth and Duty: The Press, the President and the Privilege of Power, il film di Vanderbilt − per l’impegno interpretativo degli attori, per i rapidi cambi di scena e per il ritmo incalzante dei dialoghi, sostenuto efficacemente anche dalla colonna sonora curata da Brian Tyler − si ispira chiaramente (ma con esiti che restano inferiori ai modelli) ai film sulle inchieste giornalistiche che hanno reso grande il sistema informativo americano (da Tutti gli uomini del presidente a Spotlight), con l’obiettivo di inquadrare i nuovi assetti del rapporto fra news e potere. Ma, proprio mentre mette in scena l’opera di disinformazione e le tecniche di screditamento usate dal potere contro professionisti che credono nel proprio mestiere − e adombra sullo sfondo l’interesse della CBS per un provvedimento normativo che le avrebbe consentito di mantenere intatta la sua quota nel mercato televisivo −, il regista statunitense porta, involontariamente, lo spettatore a riflettere sul problema del «governo dei media» (e quindi sulla loro libertà, indipendenza e autorevolezza), e sulla fine del mito americano della notizia. In particolare, da Truth emergono chiaramente le difficoltà di una comunicazione giornalistico-televisiva che, per ragioni di indici di ascolto, tende a privilegiare la straordinarietà e la velocità della notizia, e a svuotare in tal modo di efficacia lo strumento investigativo, che − al contrario − necessita di molto tempo, di molto impegno e di molti mezzi. Vediamo così il team di Mapes evitare di esaminare attentamente le affermazioni dei (davvero pochi) testimoni, non sottolinearne adeguatamente − laddove evidente − l’inconsistenza, non vagliare attentamente la loro credibilità e la possibilità di provare le accuse. Alla fine dell’inchiesta interna della CBS i documenti risultarono non adeguatamente verificati, l’esito per l’equipe giornalistica fu devastante e il potere politico, con tutte le sue opacità, risultò vittorioso. E forse dovremmo dar retta a Dan Rather, quando − in una recente intervista a «The Hollywood Reporter» − ha dichiarato: «We reported a true story. We didn’t do it perfectly».
