RECENSIONE SUL DOCUFILM “AFTER WORK” DI ERIK GANDINI

Vivere per lavorare o lavorare per vivere? È la provocazione e la sfida con la quale il regista Erik Gandini, apre il docufilm After Work, film inchiesta dedicato al futuro del lavoro.

Il richiamo iniziale al mito di Chronos, Dio del Tempo, ci proietta immediatamente al tic tac delle lancette dell’orologio della vita, al significato che ha per ciascuno di noi, lo scorrere del tempo  in rapporto al lavoro.

A tal proposito i termini “Chronos” e “Kairos”  definivano nell’immaginario greco il tempo in termini quantitativi e qualitativi , il regista sceglie   Chronos.

La prima scena si apre nel meraviglioso giardino Monumentale di Valsanzibio a Villa Barbarigo Pizzoni Ardemani nel quale siamo accolti  da un giardiniere,  in realtà è il ricco proprietario che ci introduce al tema del film e la sua scelta  esistenziale è quella di dedicarsi al lavoro di giardiniere, un vero lavoro da giardiniere.

E’ quindi questo significato che dovrebbe indirizzarci , in generale, verso la scelta di un  lavoro? Si certamente, ma anche no. Non si può non essere  d’accordo con l’idea generale del regista, ciascuno di noi ha una propria storia, una formazione alla vita tutta originale e  la stessa vita ci pone di fronte, non solo ai nostri desideri, alle nostre inclinazioni e ambizioni,  ma  ci pone di fronte al famoso  “principio di realtà”, così definito dalla teoria psicoanalitica da S. Freud .

Tale principio ci riporta al tema dei  limiti, di ordine interiore ed esteriore che ciascuno di noi incontra nel proprio  percorso di vita e riferendoci al film che indaga su alcune zone del mondo, il tema dei limiti  è ancora più eclatante, anche se una parte di mondo non viene quasi totalmente presa in considerazione. Un rimosso politico del regista?

Ed ecco i paesi  dell’indagine : Corea Del Sud, Kuwait, Usa e Italia, democrazie mondiali e facente parti delle superpotenze.

La prima voce che sentiamo è quella cavernicola del grande Noam Chomsky  che annuncia : “Nel mondo di oggi, uno dei massimi traguardi nella vita è avere un lavoro”. Sta forse suggerendo che a breve il mondo totalizzerà migliaia di poveri disoccupati? Visto che il tema delle Intelligenze Artificiali che rivoluzionerà il mondo del lavoro e dell’occupazione, è il leitmotiv che accompagna il discorso del regista.

Allo stesso tempo, la filosofa E.S Andersen dalla poltrona, gli farà una sorta di controcanto in tutto il film, ricordandoci come occorra ormai abbandonare l’ossessione calvinista del lavoro :”quest’idea che bisogna lavorare anche se non abbiamo bisogno…ne sei dipendente?!”.

Nelle scene successive E. Gandini che si definisce di tradizione di sinistra, non lascia spazio al dubbio : ” Se voglio sopravvivere o vivere devo lavorare”. E’  il messaggio che cogliamo  dalle prime inquadrature del viso triste e melanconico della ragazza sudcoreana che  osserva il proprio padre congelato e ripiegato al Pc che ci racconta di come la sua vita sia dedicata fin da giovanissimo alle 11-15 ore di lavoro quotidiane. Un padre work alcoholic e la propria figlia. Siamo in Sud Corea leader economica mondiale dei chips.

E’ lo stesso Padre che le ricorda come quella  disciplina del  “lavorare per sopravvivere” è ormai iscritta nel loro DNA , tramandata da generazioni vissute in fame, povertà e sofferenza. Forse al benessere non ci si può adattare così facilmente.

Lo sguardo della figlia ci riporta però ad un  “Altrove desiderato”, forse la speranza di maggiori attenzioni e rapporti con il proprio padre e gli affetti della famiglia? Oppure un  “Altrove” che vedremo più tardi trionfare nella generazione Neet  italiana e greca? Giovani spensierati a suon di spritz, spiaggia e divertimento che scopriamo essere il primato europeo di nulla facenti ma estremamente spensierati. Triste primato o urlo caotico di una generazione? Personalmente avrei bisogno di maggiori informazioni da coloro che fanno indagini più dettagliate, ad esempio da dove provengono, età, reddito, famiglia di provenienza, motivi dell’abbandono degli studi, eccetera..

Ma torniamo “all’altrove desiderato” dell’altro protagonista  sud coreano, un  giovanissimo lavoratore informatico  che ci racconta con fatica e forse vergogna della sua malattia, dovuta  alle troppe  ore di lavoro quotidiane : “Lavoro, mangiare e dormire, la mia vita è solo questo”. I sintomi dei quali soffre in maniera importante sono ansia, depressione e attacchi di panico. Il giovane ragazzo non ne può più, si arrende e si dimette, diventando un’onta per la sua famiglia. Lo vedremo più avanti nel film come questa rinuncia sofferta possa dare spazio ad altro.

La Ministra del Lavoro del Sud Corea  ci racconta come Il primariato di potenza mondiale, si traduca in un triste bollettino di suicidi, di bourn out e di crisi familiari . Lavorare in Sud Corea è diventato un problema di salute pubblica, racconta la ministra, a tal punto che  il governo , ha dovuto limitare e chiudere la connessione e il collegamento in tutti i luoghi di lavoro dalle ore 18.

È dunque lo Stato che fa scattare le lancette “dell’orologio della vita” e le ferma. Si sono inventati anche una pubblicità progresso : ora ci si dedica alla vita, ai figli, all’amore, agli affetti, agli Hobby e nello schermo vediamo un ragazzo che si dedica alla pittura e una famiglia che cena felicemente con chiacchere e sorrisi.

Si può forse provare anche un pochino di invida, perché qui è l’entità Stato che sovrasta l’ Io individuale, sceglie per me, interrompe la macchina infernale dei tempi di lavoro , mi lascia vivere. Non devo scegliere , è lo Stato a farlo per me ! Resta da capire se le giovani generazioni non desiderino scegliere individualmente cosa fare del proprio tempo.

Ma Confucio non ricordava tra le sue massime “fai quello che ami e non lavorerai un solo giorno?”.  Non credo che l’ideologia-religione confuciana possa rappresentare la subordinazione  ai ritmi impossibili di lavoro dei cittadini sud coreani, mentre dalle testimonianze si evince che  secoli di fame e povertà si siano impressi e tramandati nelle generazioni. Lo racconta appunto il padre work alcoholic e la Ministra del Lavoro: “Abbiamo  vissuto centinaia di anni  in fame e povertà.

In un balzo arriviamo  alla CASA MADRE, GLI USA, leader del capitalismo mondiale che affonda le proprie radici in un’etica del lavoro ereditata dalla religione protestante e nello specifico, il Calvinismo. Qui non si fugge dalla miseria, qui si crea l’ideologia del Capitale e dell’accumulazione.

Sono talmente accaniti gli americani che rinunciano alle ferie , al godimento dell’ozio. I dati del 2018 ricordano che i lavoratori americani hanno rinunciato a 768 milioni di giorni di vacanza! Per loro, il  piacere è l’accumulo di Paperon de Paperoni.   Il  piacere si sposa in una sorta di  maniacalità sintetizzata  dal Coach di impresa:” I’m Busy Busy Busy. I’m so Busy ” , frase ripetuta più volte mentre gira tra le stanze di lavoro ! Una figura alquanto bizzarra il coach e che a tratti  scoccia, ma ci  è appare meno terribile di Jack Torrance del film Shining di S. Kubrick, magistralmente interpretato da J. Nicholson e nella sua prosa malata e ossessiva,  recitata  all’infinito :“ Il mattino ha l’oro in bocca”. Jack, vuol far fuori tutti!

Approdiamo dunque nel paese dall’ideologia del “ bisogna vincere ad ogni costo”  e la rinuncia alle ferie diventa  motivo di orgoglio. Qui non esiste lo Stato, esiste il mercato e siamo anche sedotti dalle acrobazie del coach, che mentre parla trova il tempo di formare i suoi allievi, di allenarsi in palestra e di prepararsi ad una sorta di incontri di pugilato esistenziale. La sfida al destino fa parte del loro kit , qui si gioca ”o tutto o niente”. La musica accattivante, i ritmi incessanti , è  quell’allegria americana irresistibile. Gli americani hanno qualcosa di estremamente irresistibile, il talento e la sfacciataggine dell’individualismo.

Ma incontriamo altri personaggi che ci raccontano un altro lato di questo rapporto con il lavoro in America, come ad esempio la lavoratrice della logistica di Amazon, inizialmente motivata e impegnata quasi socialmente nel suo lavoro : “ consegno dei pacchi e so di fare del bene alle persone, sono felici nel vedermi arrivare” . Quasi un lavoro socialmente utile.

Ma la rivedremo più tardi, tesa e triste per via dell’incessante ridursi dei tempi di consegna dei pacchi : “mi controllano  con la video camera mentre guido, non ce la faccio, il mio lavoro non è quello che pensavo all’inizio”. Ed anche in questo caso  si presentano le dimissioni e la rivediamo giocare a palla con la sua famiglia in una delle ultime scene del film.  Gli Stati Uniti sono famosi da anni per il fenomeno delle dimissioni di massa che è diventato recentemente anche bandiera di un pensiero della sinistra, nel promuovere forme di diserzione dal  lavoro, attraverso appunto la rinuncia. Pensiero condivisibile, viste le paghe da fame e lo sfruttamento dei lavoratori e la perdita di alcuni diritti, fermo restando che sempre per il famoso principio di realtà, ci si può domandare come faranno a vivere. E il futuro previdenziale , le forme di tutela nella malattia pagata o nella vecchiaia, chi ci pensa? I lavoretti o il working buyout non rispondono a questi bisogni reali. Ma soprattutto perché il regista non nomina il turnover continuo in questo paese, come i licenziamenti di massa e i cambi di lavoro costante?

Arriva la voce  di Y.N. Harari che tuona : “l’automazione libererà presto milioni di posti di lavoro è molto peggio essere irrilevanti che sfruttati  e  risponde Elon Musk : “se non c’è bisogno del tuo lavoro  dove troveranno uno scopo le persone “ ,  proponendo il reddito universale !. Lo stesso Musk che recentemente ha liquidato centinaia di migliaia di posti di lavoro. Forse pensa ad un salario minimo universale di schiavitù esistenziale? Un piccolo reddito di mantenimento per dei poveri sfigati che saranno masse di persone?

Ma arriviamo nella patria  del reddito Universale, bandiera del KUWAIT ! In questo paese mentre cammini, il petrolio spruzza  da sotto i piedi, paese ricchissimo, nel quale i cittadini non hanno bisogno di produrre e di lavorare, siamo nell’Eden nero, il petrolio. E quell’Etica del Lavoro così presente nei racconti precedenti, qui in  Kuwait, non la troviamo più, se non il senso di totale inutilità di molti lavoratori che vengono pagati dallo Stato per far finta di essere degli impiegati. Lavoratori che tutte le mattine di devono recare in uffici dall’aspetto impersonale, non vissuti, ma per fare niente.

Precipitiamo in una scena di Beckett  e del teatro dell’Assurdo, gli intervistati ci raccontano e ci presentano le loro giornate vuote ed inutili, lavoratori senza senso. In  questa dimensione sconfiniamo dall’assunto inziale, il principio di realtà viene ribaltato. Sono talmente protetti dalla ricchezza del petrolio che i cittadini di questo paese, di fame non moriranno mai, semmai possono soccombere per tristezza e  depressione, di non sapere che fare di sé. Ma questo è da dimostrare, se soccombono o no, certo è che appaiono molto infelici!

Indirettamente, tornano alla mente anche le teorie di David Graeber e del famoso libro “Bullshit jobs” ,  dei lavori inutili che il sistema capitalistico produce. Libro da leggere e da discutere, perché sono invece certamente infelici in Kuwait e in tutto il mondo il 15 per cento degli schiavi a livello mondiale che il regista presenta come paradosso del reddito di base universale, così sbandierato anche dal  famoso antropologo. Tra parentesi, il reddito per tutti e tutte chi lo eroga?  In quale modo dovrebbe germogliare e per quanto tempo? Li vediamo i ricchi del mondo seduti a Davos a decidere le paghette di quasi 6 miliardi di abitanti? Sono domande banali e provocatorie ma mi piacerebbe seriamente approfondire il discorso, sempre per il famoso principio di realtà.

In Kuwait, lavorano solo i migranti, sfruttati e sottopagati, trattati  appunto da schiavi. E’ il destino lavorativo ed esistenziale di chi migra in tutto il mondo. Questi migranti schiavi, sono i corpi appesi alle gru, le masse di persone che puliscono il pesce in stabilimenti agroalimentari o separano l’immondizia negli stabilimenti della raccolta differenziata. Di questi personaggi non vediamo i volti, ma solo i corpi, ascoltiamo solamente una voce di donna che racconta di come per lei fare la schiava sia l’unica possibilità di sopravvivenza.

Per fortuna , arriva la voce di J. Varoufakis che finalmente ricorda come vi sia la necessità non del reddito universale che forse è una favoletta per bambini ( questo lo dico io), ma una robusta  e più equa redistribuzione mondiale delle ricchezze.

Chiudo la riflessione a questa preziosissima opera di Erik Gandini,  con i personaggi dei miliardari italiani e gli schiavi ed in questa dicotomia che sembra riflettere il senso di realtà che stiamo vivendo seppur in modo caotico come un cubo di rubik  dalle tante letture.

L’ultima intervista alla famiglia dei miliardari italiani presa ad esempio nella scena finale del film, è dedicata quasi interamente  alla moglie nulla facente e tutto facente. Un giorno è una giardiniera, l’altro  cambia gli zoccoli al cavallo, in un’altra giornata è  una bravissima e finissima cuoca e il giorno dopo, le ricorda il marito, può benissimo partire con un volo all’estero! Entrambi ricchissimi ma stacanovisti, raccontano  quanto sia importante lavorare, sul piano esistenziale, non hanno mai tempo e non possono annoiarsi. Entrambi fortemente contrari al reddito di base  universale, impensabile vedere degli sfaccendati!

Arrivo alle conclusioni, i miliardari sono un dato  stabile e vedono in aumento costante il loro reddito, come sono in aumento gli schiavi, gli immigrati e quelli che fanno i lavori sporchi, dei quali non vediamo i visi ma i corpi. Come sono in aumento i working poor, anche se in modo differenziato e stratificato nei vari paesi del mondo. È vero che le IA cambieranno notevolmente il futuro del lavoro, ma a favore di chi e per cosa?

Le conclusioni al film sono domande aperte, un senso di spaesamento e di grande caos .  Le risposte  andrebbero forse cercate non tanto in una dimensione esistenziale, ma politica , perché al di là delle storie molto belle e sorprendenti che il regista presenta, l’idea iniziale resta una domanda aperta e forse dalla risposta scontata: è possibile scegliere il proprio lavoro e come impiegare il proprio tempo?

Credo proprio di no, forse sarebbe importante ricordare che non esiste solo la tradizione calvinista , ma anche quella comunista e di sinistra che per un arco di tempo ci ha traghettato  in una visione universalistica del  lavoro e reddito per tutti e tutte, del diritto alla  vita per tutti e tutte, del diritto alla salute per tutti e tutte, del diritto alla conoscenza e alla cultura per tutti e tutte. Tradizione che ha fatto sperare in un mondo diverso e più giusto e che si è auto eliminata, con la quale bisognerebbe ancora fare i conti e non solo vergognarsene.
